The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen TD, launched  Aer Arann’s inaugural flight from Waterford to Birmingham today  (May 14, 2007). This is Aer Arann’s fourth route from Waterford adding to its existing routes to London Luton, Manchester and Lorient in Brittany. The airline will also be adding frequency on its existing services to London Luton and Manchester.

The new service from Waterford to Birmingham operates daily excluding Saturday, departing Waterford at 11.30am and Birmingham at 1.20pm with a flight time of one hour and twenty minutes. Fares on the route start from €39 one way including tax.  Aer Arann also announced that it will increase its frequency on the London Luton route to three flights per day on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 25th June to 2nd September 2007 to cater for the busy summer period. The Waterford to Manchester service will increased from four to six days per week from May 14.

Commenting on the announcement, Padraic O’Ceidigh, Executive Chairman Aer Arann said: “The latest launch demonstrates our commitment to further developing Aer Arann’s network of routes from Waterford Airport. We have received huge support from passengers in the southeast since we began operating from Waterford in June 2003 and are delighted to be adding our fourth route as well as increasing frequency and improving business timings on our current services.

“Birmingham is one of the UK’s largest cities offering superb shopping, top attractions, nightlife and sporting events and access to some of England’s most beautiful countryside. We believe it will prove to be a very popular destination for visitors from the southeast and we look forward to working with the team at Waterford Airport to develop the service.”

Graham Doyle, Chief Executive of Waterford Airport, said: “I’m thrilled with the Birmingham launch and the improved frequencies and timings on existing routes.  Birmingham is a great destination for shoppers and sports fans and is a very welcome addition to the route network from Waterford.  The additional Manchester services and the reintroduction of Lorient will also offer greater choice and convenience to passengers within the southeast.  In addition, business people in the city and region have long hoped for the ability to get through a day’s work in London and return the same day and I expect that the new 7.30 departure will be a huge success.  I’m delighted that Aer Arann has chosen Waterford for these services and I wish them every success.”
